My activities during the frequent lockdowns

Built decking

My wife had asked me to build decking for a few years and I always delayed because I found it daunting, I mean where do you start, how much material do you need, how do you mix cement?. During the first lockdown I finally bit the bullet and ordered the materials. I envisaged concreting posts as the most difficult task in the project until I learned of quick cement.
You literally dig the hole, place the supporting wood into the hole and half fill with water. Then you just tip in the cement until it covers the water. Bingo, it hardens quickly and when you lay the material on top, it looks quite professional. Of course, it helps if your wife does the varnishing! I added solar powered lights which illuminate the decking at night.

Cycled five miles four times a week

Sounds exhausting, but is actually quite pleasant in the summer. In April I decided to use the warm weather to lose weight and exercise the cardio-vascular system. So one spring morning I pumped the tyres on my bike which had sat idle in the garage for two years, oiled the chain and bought a helmet.
After a couple of months I detected progress, my bum no longer hurt, my leg muscles were firmer and I could breathe steadily as I cycled up hills. However, in late summer I had a rude awakening. A group of fit young men in lycra gave way to me as I careered off the main road onto a country lane that had a steep climb of 100 meters ahead. I cycled like a mad man to get to the top before they caught me. Gasping loudly as I approached the summit, they overtook me laughing and talking normally as they proceeded to disappear into the distance. Oh to be young again.

Tuned my baby-grand piano

Piano strings, like guitar strings, are effected by atmospheric changes or change in temperature. In a piano the sound board swells in high humidity stretching the strings so that the pitch is sharp. My piano is usually tuned every four months and costs around 80 GBP. During the first lockdown I decided to tune it myself as visitors were not allowed. I bought a tuning kit and downloaded a chromatic reader on my laptop.
The lower bass keys have one thick metal string, and the higher bass keys have two thinner metal strings. These are tricky to tune as the sound reverberates loudly causing the chromatic reader to go berserk. The majority of the keys have three finer metal stings that are tuned in unison, far more difficult to tune than my twelve string guitars. It takes me about four hours to tune it and there is a feeling of immense satisfaction when I have corrected the pitch of each string. Of course, saving 80 GBP brings a smile to my face, and the sound produced by my piano no longer offends my ears.

Completed a Novel

Sounds impressive, but it took me a great deal longer than three lock downs to finalise the novel. I began writing it ten years ago and left it gathering dust. I decided to split it into two shorter novels as there was a natural break at that point. Feel free to read them but please do not reproduce them in any way.
